1000 Single Moments

Reflections from Guatemala

By Dianne Sivulka

A week has passed since our return. We're home from the cobble-stoned streets of Antigua, the green highlands that once belonged to Mayan civilizations, and the savory scent of Pepian, a traditional stew with chicken and vegetables. The laundry is done. The suitcase is returned to its spot in the garage. And now I'm left with a small but treasured pile of textiles, pottery, chocolate, and coffee. And 1000 single moments.

I cannot point to one single thing I love most about these trips to Guatemala because it's all of it.

It's the warm and friendly welcome of everyone I encounter...

It's the flaky pastry of an empanada...

It's learning the story behind beautifully packaged essential oil products to provide dignified jobs for adults with special needs...

It's the robust, yet smooth cup of coffee that requires no cream or sugar.

It's the sunset over the lake surrounded by volcanoes...

It's the shopping for ceramics in a small lake-side village that has an inspiring story all its own...

It's the wind on my face as we head to Anita's for a day of cooking and culture...

It's learning how the incredible textiles we see everywhere start from a small tuft of cotton taken from a tree...

It's marveling at the skill and intricacy of the backstrap loom...

It's tasting Anita's guacamole with her secret ingredient...

And it's the conversations and connections made along the way...

Whether it's the travelers we spend time with on this culturally immersive trip to Guatemala or the people we meet along the way, the simple yet impactful moment of hearing someone's story leaves a lasting impression.

A trip like this provides the opportunity to connect to one another through shared experiences, lingering conversations over meals and laughter... lots and lots of laughter!

Interwoven throughout our week are intentional moments to connect with people doing incredible work. These changemakers are using their God-given talents and passions, to come alongside challenging situations to bring hope-inspired change.

To say my heart is full with 1000 single moments, doesn't quite cover it. But it's a start. Thankfully, we have the memories. And photos... loads and loads of photos!
