Serbia is a country rich in culture and natural beauty, nestled in the heart of the Balkans. Its history is marked by resilience, having endured centuries of conflict and upheaval, yet today it thrives with vibrant cities, stunning landscapes, and a deep sense of tradition.
As I write this, I'm in a small village on the outskirts of Novi Sad. My 18 year old son and I are visiting our relatives, exploring some of the tourism opportunities and spending time with Hana’s Hope, a non-profit committed to serving the special needs community.
Tourism Opportunities
The Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, often called the "Gibraltar of the Danube," is a sprawling 17th-century fortification perched on the banks of the river. Known for its maze-like underground tunnels and panoramic views, it’s a key cultural landmark, hosting the famous EXIT music festival each year. The fortress stands as a symbol of Novi Sad's strategic importance throughout history, blending historical significance with modern-day cultural vibrancy.
Hana's Hope: Our Do-good Partner
In a part of the world where those with disabilities are often marginalized, Hana’s Hope is coming alongside families to provide services such as therapy, group play, support groups for parents, respite care, programs for typical siblings, resources for churches, and community education for inclusion.
Hana's Hope also partners with Joni & Friends hosting summer camps for entire families and special events during holidays. Best of all they provide love, support and encouragement to people who often feel overwhelmed and shut out.
The founders of Hana’s Hope are my relatives and they came into this special space of serving because of their own story. Hana is my niece. She was diagnosed with low-functioning autism when she was three years old. Out of the pain of their own suffering, Greg and Jelena Sivulka began this organization to bring hope to families like theirs.
Hana with some of the Hana's Hope staff
Along with practical means of helping, Hana’s Hope promotes a message of inclusion and worth, believing that every person is created in God's image and a person worthy of celebration. Special needs services are not readily available in Serbia. Things that we may take for granted in the US, like wheelchair accessibility, are non-existent in Serbia. Hana's Hope is helping to change that as they build a beautiful community of hope.
Serbia offers a unique travel experience for those seeking destinations off the beaten path, with its blend of untouched nature, historic towns, and vibrant culture. From the rugged beauty of the Tara National Park to the lively streets of Belgrade, Serbia provides an authentic glimpse into the Balkans, away from the usual tourist crowds. Visitors can explore hidden monasteries, ancient fortresses, and warm hospitality, making it a rewarding choice for adventurous travelers.
